JusticeWorx “Faith without WorX is dead...”
What about medications?

The parent/guardian of a participant must provide JusticeworX staff with information on all medications being taken. Parents must request - in writing - if they wish for staff to dispense medications to their child. Our ability to honor this request will be decided in collaboration with parent(s)/guardian(s).

Alternatively, parents must also indicate in writing if they are authorizing their children to “self-dispense” any medications. Such notifications must be included with the health & waiver forms (see registration page).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Who Can Attend JusticeworX?

Participation is open to any student having completed a year of high school during the past academic year.  Junior high students should check out our
ServiceworX program for current 6th, 7th or 8th graders. Young adults (20 - 30) are invited to look at our incredible LeaderworX and GlobalworX programs! Participants need have had no previous service experience.

We recognize how hard it is for many adults - youth ministers, volunteers, parents - to take time off to take a group of students on JusticeworX which is why we provide an incredible, well-trained, staff. If your group would like to come but has no adult it’s not a problem! Student-only groups are certainly welcome. Of course, we encourage adult participants to attend JusticeworX with their students, but it is not required.

Do I Need To Be Catholic? Christian?

Justicewor
X is a program in the Catholic Christian tradition. Catholic faith guides our understanding of social justice and informs our worship life, however JusticeworX is also designed to be an open and welcoming experience for anyone wishing to live a Gospel based life. We welcome participants from various Christian backgrounds and those outside the Christian tradition interested in learning more about it.
“Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.”
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
What is the fee?

Due to the generous support of the Vincentian Community, JusticeworX is one of the best bargains in town! Unlike other mission programs, JusticeworX includes a fully trained staff at a ratio of 7:1 (or better), vehicle transportation (which means you don’t have rent your own vans!), room, board, program expenses, and facility usage. The cost of the program is $350.00 for the summer of 2008.  Groups are only responsible for getting participants to and from the Seminary at the beginning and end of the week.

A deposit of $80 secures a space with two subsequent payments of $135. Spaces cannot be held without the non-refundable deposit.

Participants seeking financial assistance or scholarships may complete a scholarship application. Please contact the Program Director for details.

Who makes up the staff?

JusticeworX is staffed by a number of wonderful professional ministers and young adults passionate about working with kids! Most of our staff come to us from a sister program called LeaderworX.  LeaderworX is an amazing and unique community of amazing young adults (20-30) dedicated to a life of faith, service and justice.  All WorX programs are led by our Leadership Team comprised of ministry professionals who coordinate the day to day activities of all our participants. Click here for more information on the WorX Leadership Team.

All summer staff are chosen from applicants across the country and undergo a two week preparation process All of our staff are background checked and undergo safety training as per the national guidelines of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops. Our staff to participant ration is 7:1 or better at all times. Safety is a constant theme both in training and daily supervision of staff members.

What are the accommodations like?

Justicewor
X participants stay in St. Vincent's Hall, one facility on the gorgeous campus of St. Joseph's Seminary in Princeton, NJ.

The Seminary is a youth & young adult ministry of the Congregation of the Mission (the Vincentians) a religious community of Catholic priests and brothers dedicated to "bringing the good news to the poor" and the formation of people of faith for ministry.

The Seminary is a truly remarkable property located along the D&R Canal State Park and Carnegie Lake. The Seminary consists of two retreat centers, extensive grounds, the breathtaking Chapel of the Miraculous Medal, cafeteria, gymnasium and dormitories (boys and girls are housed in separate dorms for the duration of the week). All meals are provided by our on-site caterers.
How about meals?

All meals are served in the St. Vincent Hall dining room and are catered by an on-site food service company. Following breakfast, participants prepare their brown-bag lunches Monday through Friday. Weather permitting we may grill during the week.

Vegetarians, vegans and those with special dietary restrictions must indicate as such on their registration form otherwise we will be unable to meet your dietary needs.
“The fruit of faith is love.
The fruit of love is service.
The fruit of service is peace."
    – Mother Teresa

What are the Service Sites like?

Community service sites are usually located in and around the Trenton, NJ area and are usually 20 minutes or less from the Seminary. Most often students are placed in a service-group that works at the same site all week. Our first condition for sites is always safety. All service sites are managed by agencies with whom we have developed a working relationship. Our second condition is that they serve poor or needy populations.

In recent years, agencies have included day care centers, housing rehabilitation, soup kitchens, food pantries, community gardening programs, a senior care center, work with abandoned children and assisting the developmentally challenged among others. Please check out our community page for information on past service sites.

What about service groups?

While one of the goals of JusticeworX is to build community within your group, we are also deeply committed to creating a larger community of faith. With this in mind, service groups are a mix of participants from different places. It is this mix of different groups working together that helps make JusticeworX unique! Though parents or students often ask to have youth put together for the week, we request that you allow us to place participants where they are needed. Though consideration will be made for physical limitations it is important that students are encouraged to interact with one another and not just their “group.” There will, of course, be many, many hours of time together during the week!

Service groups are typically comprised of 6 to 7 participants and a JusticeworX staff-person.

What do students do each day after the service ends?

Every afternoon and evening includes  an assortment of recreational activities, ministry programs, dinner and free time. The afternoon program focuses on community building through games and fun. The evening program features speakers, reflections, faith building activities, educational and group discussions, evening prayer, music, free time, and more. While the overall theme of the week is
Faith, Service & Justice, there are also daily themes designed to get participants thinking about what it means to have a "living faith.”
How is transportation organized?

Groups and individuals must arrange for transportation to the Seminary at the beginning of the week (Sunday) and pick up from the Seminary upon completion of the program on the last day (Saturday). We will assist out of town groups in need of transportation from the airport as possible.

Service groups travel to their sites using 7, 8 or 10 passenger vehicles. All vehicles are rented and drivers must be 20 years old or older, have a valid driver's license and a safe driving record. All participants MUST wear seat belts while being transported.

What about liability and insurance?

All programs are covered by St. Joseph's Seminary and the Congregation of the Mission (the Vincentians). In addition, all participating schools, churches and individuals must be able to provide proof of insurance.
Can a student with a health condition participate?

JusticeworX attempts to accommodate students with physical impairments when possible. Parents/guardians are invited to call and chat with the Program Director to determine if the required support of a particular youth exceeds the ability of program staff. Parents/guardians must notify staff via the medical information section of the registration form if their child suffers from any physical, dietary, behavioral or emotional disorders.  This is of the utmost importance. Please be advised that St. Vincent’s Hall, our home during JusticeworX is not wheelchair accessible.
How do I register?

Please see the
registration page for comprehensive details.

How often can I attend?

Because we want to allow as many people as possible to experience JustceworX, students may only participate once per summer. They are, however, encouraged to participate yearly. Many of our best youth have come to JusticeworX for four years!
